I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - Chapter 15

In my English class I am learning a lot about a the historical Maya Angelou's life while reading her Memoir I know why the Caged Bird Sings . Chapter 15 of this book is by far my favorite Chapter so far , it introduces a new Character Mrs. Flowers. Mrs. Flowers was one of the richest Aristocrats of Stamps and a good friend of grandmother. For a year Maya was in a slump to herself being anti social everyone around town . For a while Maya watched Mrs. Flowers with a bit of fantilization because this woman had such a power and essence about herself that was beautiful . One day when Marguerite was told to help Mrs. Flowers home she got her first taste of "lessons in living " through their conversation. She said to Marguerite "Now no one is going to make you talk - possibly no one can . But bear in mind , language is man's way of communicating with his fellow man and it is language alone which separates him from the lower animals".

This is my favorite Chapter so far because I feel sometimes the best knowledge we can get is through our past generations that have already experienced things present we go through . At this point in Marguerite's life she felt antisocial because she had been previously raped by her mothers boyfriend. That alone is enough to drive any one crazy but not only did that happen to her she was so young going through these life battles . Mr. Freeman the man who raped her turned up dead not long after he went to court for his physical assault to Marguerite . I feel at this time since her returning to Stamps from her mothers house were she was in this dark phase of not talking to anyone she felt very alone . What I love about this chapter is Mrs. Flowers somewhat cracked her shell of being in a shell to herself . Marguerite already looked up to this woman that had such an aura about herself that when she spoke wisdom into Marguerite she soaked in that information and didn't just let it go in through one ear and out the other . This was the first time in a while that I felt Marguerite had a peak of happiness and growth .
